Oromo Coffee Ceremony

As part of Refugee Action’s contribution to Celebrating Sanctuary London this year, the UK refugee charity is sponsoring the Oromo Coffee Company (OCC) who will be holding a traditional Oromo Coffee Ceremony near the Embassy throughout the day.

The OCC is a social enterprise run by the Oromo refugees and works to support smallholder farmers in Ethiopia by helping them to obtain income security through an innovative model of direct trade. Refugee Action has played an important role in supporting the OCC to establish their social enterprise and we are proud to be giving them a platform at Celebrating Sanctuary this year. As the historical birthplace of the bean, the coffee ceremony holds great significance in Oromo society and is a way for people to come together in a relaxed, social setting providing the space to share news and strengthen human bonds. It will be a fitting addition to the Embassy for Refugees Pavilion which will provide a focal point for dialogue and discussion around the principles of providing sanctuary.
