Palestine 2002
Directed by Elia Suleiman

93 min

A middle-class neighbourhood in Palestine provides a surprising backdrop for a series of darkly-comic vignettes, each one showing the fractured relationships between the locals. When we’re introduced to E.S (a virtually mute performance from the director himself), a man who arrives in the country to tend his ailing father, we discover the source of these surreal episodes. Suleiman’s intelligent and creative film puts deadpan wit alongside a heart-wrenching love story (set at an Israeli-run checkpoint), yet underlying all of this is a deeper study of humanity.
